The Progress of Men's Suits
Just one generation ago, the suit was the most important thing a man could have in his wardrobe but recent research suggests that now just two percent of British males have 1-3 suits in their homes, with the older generations generally bucking the trend and having more in their possession.
In previous decades the need to look smart and powerful at work demanded that a suit be worn in offices but more and more companies now employ a policy on smart casual or even casual clothes in the workplace. While high powered businessmen still make use of a varied range of suits for different occasions, others have replaced this once dominant garb with more relaxed and practical clothing.
The suit had a regal introduction to Britain. King Charles II brought the fashion to our shores after taking inspiration from King Louis XIV. Charles II decreed that in the English Court men should wear a suit and this soon spread to all English gentlemen.
With suits in demand at the time, and High Street fashion yet to emerge, the fashionistas of the time hired the best tailors they could. Many of these set up shop on London's Savile Row, a street that has become synonymous with top quality suits - so much so that the Japanese word for 'suit' - 'sebiro' - is thought to be a corruption of 'Savile Row'.
However, with the dwindling influence of the monarchy over today's youth culture, the princes' power to maintain a high level of decorum is on the down. In their place are pop stars and actors who need not the same high level of smartness and the fashion trends today are no longer set by royalty who dress to impress leaders of other nations.
With no need to wear suit to work, men have fewer reasons to wear such an ensemble however the scarcity of men's suits nowadays means that a well fitted suit can make its wearer look even more striking.
When surveyed, most men said they wore a smart suit - black, grey, pinstripe or navy - for job interviews and important business meetings and a more expensive suit - normally in black - for formal outings or special occasions.
As with many things in society, suits can now be purchased more cheaply than before from a High Street store and, if needs be, a tailor can make alterations to make the design more fitting and bespoke for your purposes.
