Beastie Land

I knew better than to take ...I was the 4th child you see..
but
they were already in the house, weren't they?
technically they were
so I sat on a perch near the floor
where they played
and with swiftness of youth
I one at a time
entrapped tiny ones
in a mayonnaise jar
scampered upstairs
it was not very far from scene
of abduction
to my bedroom mess
..
I had them for I do not know
quite how long
memory moth eaten
spotty today
I remember quite clearly
the words she would say
or maybe I didn't remember
but yet
I know her posture
her tone
her direction
and I took my poor baby
mice out through her kitchen
my
mind in a deviant twist
... should I ?
no,
I passed on through their home
on her laundry room porch
let them loose in the barn
where the cats
all stood guard
... poor babies
they had not a chance
my tears spill
over small creatures, gray
and that long ago day
