Rabbit losing 'baby fur'...?

I have a black dwarf lop bunny. He gets groomed once a week like the breeder said although i don't know if i'm doing it too mach as around 4brushes of fur comes out. His undercoat is grey fluffy and his proper coat is black, it is mainly the grey that is coming out. Problem is when I pick him up for a cuddle I am totally covered in hair of him and now he has patches where the grey is coming through the black and he often has clumps of baby fur coming off.
He isn't ill, has a very balanced diet that was recomended by the vet. I've checked in my books and looked at all the skin complaints and he seems perfect. He is acting just like normal playing and hopping about. Is this just him losing his baby fur (the breeder said this would happen) and the weather getting hotter? Should I be worried? Or am I being over protective? x

I have a black baby lop too, he's about 14 weeks now and like yours, he is all black with a grey fluffy undercoat which is incredibly soft.

The likelyhood is that he is doing both - losing his baby fluff and also getting a summer coat at the same time. My previous rabbit changed coats with the seasons even though she was a house rabbit.

If you're new to rabbit ownership - or even if you're not, buy a book called 'Rabbits for Dummies'. It has everything and more in.

As long as your rabbit displays no signs of injury or poor physical or mental health I'd try not to worry. Its unlikely something is wrong with him if he's only a baby.

Just keep him brushed and enjoy his babyhood :)

  • You made some nice points there. I did a search on the subject and found most persons will go along with with your site.

  • This might not be the most beneficial place to request this, but I’m searching for a pest management provider in the pittsburgh region and have no way to find out who is the most effective. I discovered this business that is really close to me and wished to see if any person has any testimonials on them.
